You excitedly open the PDF of your Loonstrook (payslip) and suddenly it looks like Matrix code. The final figure is much lower than your gross wage, you see words like 'ZVW' or 'Loonheffing' and panic: 'Are they overcharging me?'<\/p>\n<p>Relax, breathe. Nobody is scamming you. The Dutch tax system is strict, but very transparent. To stop you breaking into a cold sweat, we are going to translate your payslip from Dutch into plain English and explain where every cent goes.<\/p>\n<h2>Survival Dictionary: the parts of your Loonstrook<\/h2>\n<p>Payslips may look different depending on the agency or company, but they all have exactly the same three mandatory legal sections. Take note:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Personal and Contract Details (Bovenkant)<\/h3>\n<p><b>This is the top of the payslip. Always check that this is correct:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>BSN (Burgerservicenummer): your Dutch social security number. Without it, you would pay the maximum tax.<\/p>\n<p>Functie: your job title (e.g. Logistiek Medewerker ).<\/p>\n<p>Uurloon \/ Uurtarief: your gross hourly wage. If you work through an agency, this is the most important figure to keep an eye on.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Earnings (Brutoloon)<\/h3>\n<p>Here comes the nice part: the money you have earned before the tax office runs the vacuum cleaner over it.<\/p>\n<p>Normale uren \/ Gewerkte uren: the base hours you worked that week or month, multiplied by your hourly wage.<\/p>\n<p>Toeslagen \/ Overwerk: the allowances. In the Netherlands overtime, night shifts ( Nachttoeslag ) and Sundays ( Zondagstoeslag ) are paid very well. All of this is added here.<\/p>\n<h3>3. The Dreaded Deductions (Inhoudingen)<\/h3>\n<p>Now we reach the painful part. This is what is deducted by law to keep the Dutch welfare state running:<\/p>\n<p>Loonheffing \/ Loonbelasting: income tax (the equivalent of IRPF in Spain). It is the biggest deduction you will see.<\/p>\n<p>ZVW (Zorgverzekeringswet): a mandatory contribution under the Health Insurance Act. Note: this does not replace your monthly private health insurance, it is an extra state tax.<\/p>\n<p>Pensioen: the deduction for your pension plan. In the Netherlands companies contribute a large part, but a small percentage is also deducted from you.<\/p>\n<h2>The secret to a higher net wage: the 'Loonheffingskorting'<\/h2>\n<p>Remember this unpronounceable word. The Loonheffingskorting is a tax credit, a 'discount' on your tax that gives you more net pay at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>When you sign your contract, you are given a form to indicate whether you want to apply this discount. The answer is YES. *<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udea8 Warning: by law you can apply this credit to only ONE job at a time. If you have two part-time jobs and tick 'yes' for both, you'll earn a lot each month, but at the end of the year the Belastingdienst (Dutch tax office) will send you a letter demanding thousands of euros back. Be very careful.<\/p>\n<h2>Invisible money: Vakantiegeld and Reserves<\/h2>\n<p>If you work through an employment agency (uitzendbureau), you'll see a section called Reserveringen (reserves). It's your money, but you 'can't touch' it straight away.<\/p>\n<p>Vakantiegeld (holiday pay): in the Netherlands there are no 14 payments a year. You are paid 12 months, and separately you build up 8% of your gross salary every week. That money is saved and paid to you in one go in May, just in time for the summer holidays.<\/p>\n<p>Vakantiedagen \/ Verlofdagen (holiday days): the agency also saves a small percentage to pay you for the days you decide to take off as holiday. If you leave the company before using them, they are paid out in your final payslip.<\/p>\n<h2>Frequently Asked Questions about getting paid in the Netherlands (FAQ)<\/h2>\n<h2>What is the real difference between gross and net?<\/h2>\n<p>The gross salary ( Bruto ) is the total the company pays. The net salary ( Netto ) is what reaches your bank account.
