It's the Waterschapbelasting, the most 'painful' but necessary tax in the Netherlands. Honestly: if you live here, you pay to stay dry. But there are legal ways to reduce the bill. In this article you'll find everything you need to know about this tax that nobody escapes\u2026 unless you meet certain conditions.<\/p>\n<h2>The big mistake: confusing tap water with the annual tax<\/h2>\n<p>The first thing you need to understand is that in the Netherlands water is paid for in two completely separate ways:<\/p>\n<p>Drinking water (Drinkwater): this is what you use when you shower or drink. You pay it monthly to companies such as Vitens or Dunea .<\/p>\n<p>Water board tax (Waterschapbelasting): an annual charge managed by the water boards (Waterschappen). If you leave the Netherlands permanently, you must let them know so they refund the rest of the money.<\/p>\n<h2>Why does my neighbour pay less than me?<\/h2>\n<p>It depends on how many people are registered at the address. If your neighbour lives alone, they pay 1 treatment unit. If there are two of you, you pay 3 units.
