You have the ticket and the motivation, but one question keeps you up at night: 'What if the company lets me go? Will I be stranded thousands of kilometres from home without a cent?'<\/p>\n<p>It is a completely normal fear, but we have good news for you: the Netherlands has one of the most robust and secure social protection systems in Europe. If you work legally, you pay contributions. And if you pay contributions, you have a safety net that protects you. In this guide, written by experts in the Dutch labour market and updated for 2026 , we put the government's bureaucratic jargon aside. We explain exactly how unemployment benefit works in the Netherlands, how much you will receive, what happens if you work through an agency and how you can take that benefit to Spain if you decide to go back.<\/p>\n<h3>1. What are the UWV and the WW-uitkering?<\/h3>\n<p>To understand the Dutch system, you first need to know its basic vocabulary. Forget the Spanish acronyms; here the UWV sets the rules.<\/p>\n<p>The UWV (Uitvoeringsinstituut Werknemersverzekeringen): this is the exact equivalent of the SEPE (formerly INEM) in Spain. It is the public body responsible for managing unemployment benefits, long-term sick leave and return to work.<\/p>\n<p>WW-uitkering (Werkloosheidswet): this is the official legal name for unemployment benefit. Memorise it, because you'll see it on every official form and letter you receive.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Requirements for unemployment benefit: the '26 out of 36 weeks' rule<\/h3>\n<p>In Spain you're used to the rule 'contribute for a year to receive four months'. The Dutch system is much faster and designed to protect its very flexible labour market.<\/p>\n<p>To be entitled to unemployment benefit ( WW-uitkering ), the golden requirement is to meet the 26 out of 36 weeks rule .<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean? That you must have worked (and paid contributions) for at least 26 weeks within the 36 weeks immediately before your dismissal.<\/p>\n<p><b>Critical details you need to know:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It doesn't matter if you changed company: you might have worked 10 weeks at a logistics warehouse with one agency and then 16 weeks at a production factory with another. The time adds up. What matters is your total weeks of contributions in the country, not who you worked for.<\/p>\n<p>The dismissal must not be your fault: to receive unemployment benefit, you must have lost your job for reasons beyond your control (end of contract, redundancies, company bankruptcy).<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udea8 Careful with resigning: as in almost all of Europe, if you leave your job voluntarily (resign), you automatically lose the right to unemployment benefit. If your employer proposes a termination by mutual agreement ( vaststellingsovereenkomst ), make sure the document states that the initiative came from the company so you don't lose your rights with the UWV.<\/p>\n<h3>3. How much unemployment benefit do you get in the Netherlands and for how long?<\/h3>\n<p>This is the million-dollar question. If tomorrow you are left without income, how much money will the Dutch state pay you so you can cover your rent and food?<\/p>\n<p>The UWV calculation is very transparent and based on your average daily wage ( dagloon ) over your last year of work.<\/p>\n<p><b>The benefit percentages in 2026 are:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>First 2 months: you will receive 75% of your last gross salary.<\/p>\n<p>From the 3rd month: you will receive 70% of your last gross salary.<\/p>\n<p>Note: there is a legal maximum daily cap, but unless you had a senior executive's salary, you will receive exactly those percentages of what you were earning.<\/p>\n<p>How long will I receive it? The minimum guaranteed duration of unemployment benefit is 3 months (as long as you meet the 26-week rule). From there, the duration increases according to your employment history. The basic general rule is: 1 year of work in the Netherlands entitles you to 1 month of benefit , up to a legal maximum of 24 months (2 years).<\/p>\n<h3>4. Employment agencies and dismissal: what nobody tells you<\/h3>\n<p>The vast majority of Spaniards who come to work in the Netherlands do so through an Uitzendbureau (temporary employment agency). And this is where there is the most misinformation on internet forums.<\/p>\n<h2>The dreaded 'Phase A' contract<\/h2>\n<p>During your first year and a half in the Netherlands, it is very common to have a Phase A contract with an agency clause ( uitzendbeding ). This means the contract is 100% flexible: if the client (the factory or warehouse) says there is no more work for you, your contract with the agency ends instantly that same day.<\/p>\n<p>Many workers panic, thinking they are unprotected. That is not true. Even if your contract ends overnight because of the agency clause, if you have completed your 26 weeks of work, you are entitled to receive UWV unemployment benefit immediately . The agency simply has to notify that the work has ended and you must start the application online.<\/p>\n<h2>What happens if I am let go while I am ill? (Ziektewet)<\/h2>\n<p>If you fall ill while in Phase A, your contract with the company ends. But you are not left out on the street. You automatically become covered by the Sickness Benefits Act ( Ziektewet ). The UWV (or your agency's insurer) will pay you at least 70% of your salary while you are on sick leave, without using up your normal unemployment benefit time.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Step by step: how to apply for unemployment benefit online in the Netherlands<\/h3>\n<p>If the day comes when you lose your job, you don't have to queue at any office. The whole system is digital, but you have to be quick. Follow these steps so you don't lose money:<\/p>\n<p>Register as a jobseeker: the first step is to go to the official werk.nl website using your DigiD . You must register as an active jobseeker.<\/p>\n<p>Apply for the benefit: on the same website or through uwv.nl , fill in the WW-uitkering application form.<\/p>\n<p>The deadline is critical: you have a maximum of 1 week after your last working day to apply. If you are late, the UWV may penalise you by reducing the amount of money they pay you.<\/p>\n<p>Your obligations (Sollicitatieplicht): receiving unemployment benefit in the Netherlands is not a paid holiday. The UWV is strict. You are required to apply for at least 4 job offers a month (normally one a week) and record that evidence in your werk.nl digital portal. If they see you aren't actively looking for work, they will cut off the money.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Thanks to European Union employment rules, you can export your contributions.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, you need to request the U1 Form ( PD U1 ) from the UWV. This document is an official certificate stating exactly how many months and days you have paid contributions in the Dutch system.<\/p>\n<p>When you arrive in Spain and go to the SEPE to claim unemployment benefit, you will hand in this U1 form.
