Fear is normal. The uncertainty weighs on you. But take a deep breath because you are in one of the countries with the strongest social safety net in Europe.

The WW-uitkering ( Werkloosheidswet , the Dutch unemployment benefit) is your cushion while you find your next opportunity. And the best part: you can even take it to Spain if you decide to go home while you look for work.

In this guide we explain everything plainly: requirements, exact amounts, deadlines and the trick almost nobody knows for exporting your unemployment benefit outside the Netherlands.

MANDATORY requirements for receiving unemployment benefit in the Netherlands

Not everyone is entitled to the WW-uitkering. The Netherlands is generous, but demanding. Here are the three conditions you absolutely MUST meet:

⚡ The Golden Rule of 26 weeks (De wekeneis)

This is the most important rule and the one that causes the most confusion:

You must have worked at least 26 of the last 36 weeks before your dismissal.

Note: these must be weeks worked as an employee with a contract (not self-employed). If you had sick leave or paid holiday, those weeks also count.

What if you worked 24 weeks? Bad luck. You aren't entitled to the WW-uitkering. But don't give up: you might be entitled to other support such as bijstand (municipal assistance), although it is much less money.

🚫 You must not have resigned (Dismissal vs. Voluntary Resignation)

RED ALERT: If you resign voluntarily (zelf ontslag nemen), you do NOT get unemployment benefit . Full stop.

The WW-uitkering only kicks in if:

You are dismissed (ontslag)

Your temporary contract comes to an end and isn't renewed

You are dismissed due to a company restructuring

Very rare exceptions: If you resign because your boss harassed you, didn't pay you or put you in dangerous situations, you might be entitled. But you need solid evidence and the process is complicated.

¿Y si me despiden por «culpa grave»? (Robo, violencia, abandono del puesto sin avisar) Tampoco cobras. El UWV investigará y si confirma la falta grave, te denegarán la prestación.

✅ Being available for work

Having worked the 26 weeks isn't enough. You must also:

Live in the Netherlands (at first; later I'll explain how to move to Spain)

Be registered with the UWV as a jobseeker

Actively look for work and be able to prove it if asked

Accept reasonable job offers (if you turn something down without a good reason, you can be penalised)

💰 How much money will I get? (The Mental Calculator)

Here comes the part you are most interested in. The good news: unemployment benefit in the Netherlands is generous compared with Spain .

The first 2 months: You receive 75% of your last gross daily wage

From the 3rd month: It drops to 70% of your gross wage

Important: the calculation is based on your sv-loon (the wage on which you pay social security contributions), which is normally your gross monthly salary divided by the days of the month.

Practical example:

Imagine you earned €2,500 gross per month :

First 2 months: €2,500 × 75% = €1,875 gross/month

From the 3rd month: €2,500 × 70% = €1,750 gross/month

Note: Tax is deducted from that amount, so you will receive a little less net in your account.

Key fact: Payment is monthly and made by the UWV (the employment office), not your former employer. The money arrives directly in your bank account around the 24th-26th of each month.

⏱️ How long does unemployment benefit last? (The length-of-service rule)

The duration depends on how many years you have worked in total (not just at your last company, but over your entire working life, even if it was in different EU countries).

The simple formula:

For each year worked = 1 month of benefit (for the first 10 years)

After 10 years the calculation gets a bit more complicated, but you can reach up to 24 months of benefit if you have worked many years.

The absolute minimum: If you meet the 26 weeks of work, you are entitled to a minimum of 3 months of benefit . This is vital: many people think they have nothing because they only worked 7-8 months, but they are entitled to those 3 months!

Quick examples:

You worked 2 years → 2 months of benefit (but the minimum is 3, so you get 3)

You worked 5 years → 5 months of benefit

You worked 10 years → 10 months of benefit

You worked 15+ years → Up to 24 months of benefit

📋 Step by step: How to apply for the WW-uitkering with the UWV

Applying for unemployment benefit in the Netherlands is surprisingly easy if you know where to go. Here is the exact process:

Step 1: You need an active DigiD

DigiD is your digital identity in the Netherlands. If you don't have it or have lost it, reactivate it NOW at digid.n l . Without DigiD you can't do anything online.

Step 2: Go to the official werk.nl website

Don't go to the UWV directly. The unemployment benefit application is made through werk.nl , the official employment portal.

Log in with your DigiD

Ve a «WW-uitkering aanvragen» (Solicitar prestación por desempleo)

Fill in the online form (it will take about 15-20 minutes)

Upload documents if asked (contract, final payslip, dismissal letter)

Paso 3: Plazos – ¡OJO CON ESTO!

CRITICAL: You must apply for unemployment benefit in the first week after your last working day .

Was your last day Friday 14 March? Then you must apply before 21 March .

If you are late, you lose money . The UWV won't pay you for the days/weeks you let pass. And if you take too long (more than 4 weeks), they can refuse the benefit altogether.

Step 4: Wait for the response

The UWV takes between 2 and 4 weeks to process your application. They will send you a letter (or email) confirming whether you have been approved. If everything is correct, the first payment will arrive shortly afterwards.

💎 The Crown Jewel: Exporting your unemployment benefit to Spain

Here is the secret almost nobody knows that can change your life if you are thinking of returning to Spain temporarily:

You can go to Spain (or another EU country) to look for work and keep receiving Dutch unemployment benefit for 3 months.

Esto se llama «exportar la prestación» y es completamente legal. Pero necesitas seguir unos pasos muy concretos.

📄 The U2 Form (Exporting)

This is the magic document that lets you take your WW-uitkering to Spain.

How it works:

You apply for unemployment benefit in the Netherlands as normal

You wait 4 weeks receiving benefit and being available to the UWV in the Netherlands

Pides el formulario U2 al UWV (se llama oficialmente «PD U2» o «documento portátil U2»)

You go to Spain (or wherever you want within the EU)

You register with the SEPE (Spanish employment office) within 7 days of arriving

You keep receiving your Dutch unemployment benefit for up to 3 months

Key requirement: You must have been available and registered with the UWV in the Netherlands for at least 4 weeks after your dismissal before you can leave. You can't leave on the first day.

And after the 3 months? You have two options:

Return to the Netherlands before the 3 months are up and resume your normal Dutch benefit

Stay in Spain and lose your entitlement to Dutch benefit (although you can use the U1 form to count that contribution time in Spain, see below)

📝 The U1 Form (Your history)

This one is different. The U1 doesn't give you immediate money, but it is pure gold if you plan to stay in Spain in the long term.

What is the U1 for?

It certifies all the time you have paid contributions in the Netherlands so that this work history counts when you apply for unemployment benefit in Spain (or another EU country) in the future.

When to use it:

You don't want to claim Dutch unemployment benefit now

You would rather wait and pay contributions in Spain first

When you apply for unemployment benefit in Spain, those years in the Netherlands will be added to your Spanish length of service

Real example: You worked 3 years in the Netherlands + 1 year in Spain. When you apply for unemployment benefit in Spain, you will have 4 years of service (not just 1), which means more months of benefit.

You request the U1 from the UWV before leaving the Netherlands or even later from Spain. You hand it to the SEPE when you apply for your Spanish unemployment benefit.

🎁 Bonus: La «Transitievergoeding» (El Finiquito holandés)

Here is extra money many people forget to claim:

The transitievergoeding is a mandatory compensation your employer must pay you when you are dismissed (not when your temporary contract ends).

How much is it?

Approximately 1/3 of your gross monthly salary for each year worked at that company.

If you worked 3 years earning €2,500/month, you are owed about €2,500 in severance (2,500 ÷ 3 × 3 years).

Important:

This is separate from unemployment benefit . The severance is paid by the company, the benefit is paid by the UWV

Check your final payslip (eindafrekening) to see whether it was paid

If it isn't there, claim it. The company is legally obliged

Even if you were on probation for more than 6 months, you may be entitled

Tip: Don't leave that money on the table. Many expats leave the Netherlands without claiming it because they don't know about it.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions about Unemployment Benefit (FAQ)

Can I go on holiday while receiving unemployment benefit?

Yes. You are entitled to 20 days of paid holiday a year while receiving the WW-uitkering.

But there are rules:

You must inform the UWV before you leave (you can do this online at werk.nl)

Those 20 days are deducted from your annual total

If you leave without telling them and get caught, you can be penalised and have your benefit temporarily stopped

What happens if I find a job that pays LESS than my benefit?

Good question. Never turn down a job because of this.

El UWV tiene un programa llamado «WW-suppletie» que te complementa el sueldo hasta llegar aproximadamente al nivel de tu paro anterior (con límites).

Example: Your benefit is €1,800 but you find a job paying €1,200. The UWV can give you €600 extra for a few months to ease the transition.

The key: always accept the job and then inform the UWV. They adjust your benefit automatically.

If I resign myself (voluntary resignation), am I entitled to unemployment benefit?

Generally NO.

Only in very exceptional cases such as:

Provable workplace harassment

Dangerous or illegal working conditions

Systematic non-payment of wages

Your partner gets a job in another city/country and you have to move (this is debatable and the UWV decides case by case)

You need solid evidence and the UWV will investigate. In 90% of cases, resigning = no benefit.

Does unemployment benefit count towards retirement (AOW)?

Yes. While you receive the WW-uitkering, you keep building up entitlement to your AOW (Dutch State pension).

Time on unemployment benefit counts as if you were working. You lose nothing towards your retirement.

You also keep contributing for health insurance (but you will still have to pay your monthly share).

What happens to my health insurance while I am on unemployment benefit?

You are still required to have Dutch health insurance while you live in the Netherlands and receive benefit.

The difference: you can apply for zorgtoeslag (health insurance allowance) because your income is lower. This can cover much or all of the monthly premium.

Apply at toeslagen.nl with your DigiD.

Can I work as a self-employed person while receiving unemployment benefit?

Yes, but with conditions.

Si empiezas como freelance o autónomo (zzp’er) mientras cobras el WW-uitkering:

You must inform the UWV immediately

The income you earn as self-employed is deducted from your benefit

If you earn more than your benefit, you obviously stop receiving it

Pero te cuentan las horas y días como «búsqueda de empleo activa»

The important thing: Don't hide anything from the UWV. If you are caught working without declaring it, they can reclaim ALL the money you received + a fine.

Ready for your next chapter?

Losing your job is just a bump in the road. With the WW-uitkering you have a financial cushion to recover, plan and find something better.

Now that you know how unemployment benefit works, it is time to look for your next opportunity to work in the Netherlands .

See Job Offers in the Netherlands →

Thousands of offers updated every day.
