You cannot apply for DigiD as soon as you get off the plane. The digital system requires your identity to already exist in the Dutch civil registry databases ( BRP ).

Have your permanent BSN number: you must have attended your appointment at the town hall ( Gemeente ) and have the official document showing your citizen number.

3. The definitive step-by-step guide to applying for DigiD in 2026
The process has two critical phases: the initial online application and the mandatory physical activation. Follow these instructions to avoid the typical mistakes that lock accounts.
Phase 1: Applying on the platform
Step 1: go to the official website ( www.digid.nl ) and select English (or download the official DigiD app directly on your phone).

What happens if I forget my DigiD password or change my phone number?
If you forget your login details and haven't activated the mobile app with biometric verification (fingerprint or facial recognition), the system will not let you recover your password by email for strict security reasons. You will have to go to the official website, request a credential reset and wait for the system to send a new physical letter with a recovery code to your current registered address. The same happens if you change your mobile number: if the system cannot send you the verification SMS, you are locked out and must request a data update that will require postal confirmation.
Can I share my DigiD username and password with the agency or an adviser?
Absolutely NOT. Under no circumstances should you give your DigiD credentials to anyone: not your housemates, not your agency coordinators, not supposed tax advisers on Facebook. DigiD is legally equivalent to your handwritten signature and to showing your ID at a public office. Anyone with access to your DigiD can impersonate you, change your bank account number in the tax office database, apply for loans in your name or divert your health allowance money ( Zorgtoeslag ) to other people's accounts. If you need a tax adviser to file your tax return, the legal procedure is not to give them your login details; you must issue an official authorisation through the DigiD authorisation system ( DigiD Machtigen ).
Does DigiD have an expiry date?
DigiD doesn't expire on a fixed date like a passport, but it is deactivated through inactivity . If you don't use your DigiD account to log in to any government portal or official body for a continuous period of 3 years , the system assumes you have left the country permanently or that the account is unused for security reasons, and cancels it automatically.
