Requirements for working in the Netherlands

From mandatory documents to administrative procedures, we support you at every step so you can start your career in the Netherlands with the security and peace of mind you need.

Forget your worries and let a specialised team guide you through all the paperwork. And don't forget something very important: how soon you can start working in the Netherlands depends largely on how quickly you provide all your documents to the IJC team. That is why it is key to be quick and proactive.

1

EU ID card or passport

The first requirement for working in the Netherlands is a valid physical ID card or passport. As a European citizen, this document allows you to live and work legally in the Netherlands. (No work or residence permit is required.)

2

Mandatory BSN number

One of the most important requirements is obtaining your BSN (Burgerservicenummer). Without this tax identification number you cannot sign a contract, open a bank account or access public healthcare.

3

Dutch bank account

You need one to receive your monthly salary and manage rent or insurance payments in the country. You can use digital banks suitable for international payments, such as Revolut.

4

Dutch health insurance

All residents must take out mandatory health insurance. This is one of the requirements you must meet from your first day of work in the country.

Key aspects of the requirements

At International Job Challenge we help you through the entire documentation process and your move to the Netherlands. How long this takes depends largely on how quickly you provide the required documents. That is why these key points matter:

Key 01

Documents in order

Start by making sure all your documents are up to date and available in physical form. IJC checks your documents before departure to avoid setbacks.

Key 02

Getting your BSN

We explain how to apply for it when you arrive, which documents you need and how long the full registration process takes.

Key 03

Opening a bank account

One of the requirements is opening a local account or using an international one. IJC guides you through the process.

Key 04

Mandatory health insurance

Our job offers come with recommended health insurance. We inform you about the mandatory basic coverage.

Key 05

Additional certificates

Some jobs require a certificate of good conduct, a valid driving licence or accredited technical training. We inform you depending on your vacancy.

Key 06

Language and adaptation

Although it is not a legal requirement, a conversational level of English makes integration easier. We give you guidance so you can meet all the requirements with confidence.
