Certificates for working in the Netherlands: VCA, Reach Truck and how to earn more per hour

General · Andreu Jimenez

If you have come to work in the Netherlands, or are planning to, you probably know the Dutch labour market is one of the most dynamic in Europe. But there is something many 'expat' blogs overlook: there is an invisible but very real glass ceiling for workers without 'the papers'. We don't mean your ID or passport, but technical training certificates.

You can come to the Netherlands, work as a basic production operator and earn the minimum wage. It's a decent option and a great way to start. But if you want real savings, stability and more than €2,500 net a month, you need to specialise. In this country, certificates rule. A certificate you can get in one or two days can make a difference of up to €500 on your monthly payslip.

In this analytical guide we break down the certificates that really matter in 2026, why your Spanish forklift licence won't be much use and how you can get these qualifications for free through an employment agency.

1. The VCA certificate: the master key to industry

The VCA ( Veiligheid, Gezondheid en Milieu Checklist Aannemers ) is without doubt the most requested certificate in the Netherlands. If you are going to work in construction, maintenance, the petrochemical industry or even in certain high-risk logistics warehouses, the VCA is not optional: it is a legal requirement.

What exactly is the VCA?

It is a safety, health and environmental management system. Basically, it guarantees the company that you know the occupational risks and won't cause an accident for yourself or your colleagues. In a country where workplace safety is taken almost religiously seriously, having the VCA opens the doors to the best-paying companies.

The 'trick' for Spaniards

Many candidates rule out jobs that require VCA because they think the exam will be in Dutch or technical English. Wrong. The official VCA exam can be taken in Spanish .

VCA Basis: the level for operational workers. The exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions and is valid for 10 years .

VCA VOL: the level for supervisors and self-employed workers (ZZP).

Strategic view: getting your VCA in Spanish is the smartest decision you can make. It gives you an immediate competitive advantage over other international workers who don't dare take the exam, allowing you to access sectors such as solar panel installation or heavy industry, where base salaries are higher than in logistics.

2. The 'aristocrat' of the warehouse: the reach truck licence

If you search Google for 'work in the Netherlands', you'll see hundreds of order picker vacancies. But if you want to 'earn money in the Netherlands', look for reach truck driver vacancies.

Why the Reach Truck and not the Heftruck?

They are often confused, but in the Dutch market they are worlds apart:

Heftruck (conventional forklift): used to load and unload lorries outdoors or in large areas. There are plenty of jobs, but also a lot of competition.

Reach Truck: the queen of modern warehouses. It lifts loads more than 10 metres high in extremely narrow aisles. It requires much greater technical skill and is therefore better paid.

The recognition problem

Many workers arrive with a forklift licence obtained in Spain after a four-hour course. Let's be realistic: in 90% of cases, the Spanish licence won't be valid in the Netherlands .

Dutch companies and their liability insurers require certification under local standards (such as BMW or CCV). In addition, the way of working in logistics centres in Venlo, Tilburg or Eindhoven is much more demanding in terms of safety regulations than in most Spanish warehouses.

Impact on your payslip: a Reach Truck driver with a Dutch certificate can earn between €2 and €4 more per hour than a floor operator. Multiply that by 160 hours a month and you will see why this certificate is the best investment of time you can make.

3. EPT certificate: your first step towards specialisation

If the Reach Truck seems too complex to start with, the EPT ( Electric Pallet Truck ) certificate is your best ally.

In the Netherlands' huge warehouses, moving pallets by hand is inefficient. That is why almost all goods are moved with EPTs, where the worker rides on or walks alongside the machine. Although it seems simple, companies require a safe operation certificate to prevent accidents and damage to goods.

Why get it?

Less physical effort: you stop pushing trolleys and start operating a machine. This drastically reduces fatigue and long-term injuries.

Access to better positions: many advanced Order Picking offers require the use of an EPT.

Speed: the course usually lasts just a few hours and the exam is purely practical.

4. Salary comparison: how much is a certificate really worth?

Let's look at the hard numbers, which is what really matters for your savings. Based on the market situation in April 2026 , this is how monthly net income compares (estimated for 40 hours a week, including shift allowances):

Job position

Certificate required

Approximate Net Salary

Basic production operator

None

€2,100 – €2,200

Logistics operator (EPT)

EPT certificate

€2,250 – €2,350

Industrial fitter / Construction

VCA Basic

€2,400 – €2,600

Reach Truck driver

Reach Truck licence

€2,550 – €2,800

As you can see, the difference between being 'a pair of hands' and a 'certified specialist' can be more than €5,000 a year. That's the difference between returning to Spain with modest savings or with enough capital to buy a home or start a business.

5. The agency 'hack': how to get trained for free

This is where business strategy comes in. Many candidates hold back because a Reach Truck course can cost between €200 and €400, and the VCA around €150. If you have just arrived and are on a tight budget, it seems like an unaffordable expense.

The reality of the agency sector:

Employment agencies in the Netherlands have a constant shortage of specialists. There are thousands of basic operators, but not enough Reach Truck drivers. That is why reputable agencies have training budgets set aside for their workers.

If you prove to be a punctual, reliable worker with a good attitude during your first weeks, many agencies (including ours) will be willing to pay for your certificate .

Why do they do it? Because it is more profitable for them to have you working as a specialist (they charge the end client more) than as a basic operator.

What do you gain? An official qualification, valid throughout the country, that belongs to you and guarantees a higher salary from the first day you get the licence.

6. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about training in the Netherlands

Do I need a high level of English to get a Reach Truck licence?

You don't need to be bilingual, but you do need to understand the safety instructions and the machine controls. Most practical courses are very visual. If you have an A2 (basic) level and are keen to learn, the instructor will help you pass the test without any problems.

Is my Spanish B driving licence valid for operating machinery in the Netherlands?

No. A car driving licence is completely separate from industrial licences. To operate any load-handling vehicle on private premises (warehouse or factory), you need the specific certificate for that vehicle (Heftruck, Reachtruck, Combilift, etc.).

Can I work while I get my certificates?

Absolutely. The ideal approach is to start as a logistics operator and, once you are there and know the warehouse, ask your coordinator for access to the training course. It is the most natural and safest way to move up.

Do certificates expire in the Netherlands?

Yes. The VCA is valid for 10 years . Machinery certificates (Reach Truck, Heftruck) usually recommend a refresher course or re-certification every 5 years , depending on the company's safety policy and insurance.

7. Conclusion: stop competing on price and start competing on value

Working in the Netherlands is an incredible financial opportunity, but it has an expiry date if you don't move forward. The most basic jobs are the first to be affected by automation or by the arrival of new flows of international workers.

The only way to secure your future in the Netherlands and build real savings is through technical training. Whether it's VCA to get into heavy industry or a reach truck licence to master logistics, these certificates separate those who 'survive' in the Netherlands from those who 'succeed'.

Don't come to the Netherlands just to work; come to become a specialist. The Dutch market is willing to pay you very well, but it requires you to prove your worth with official, up-to-date certifications.
