Income Tax Return in the Netherlands (2026): how to file it, the M-Biljet and how to get your money back

General · Andreu Jimenez

Breathe. Don't panic.

Unlike in Spain, where filing your tax return can sometimes mean headaches, the tax return in the Netherlands usually means good financial news, especially if you are an international worker (expat) or have come to work through an employment agency.

1. The myth: is it mandatory to file a tax return in the Netherlands?

The short answer is: not always, but it is almost always in your interest to file one. Here is the legal and realistic answer. You are legally obliged to file a tax return ( Aangifte Inkomstenbelasting ) in these two scenarios:

You have received the blue letter: if the Belastingdienst sends a letter to your home (or a notification to your digital mailbox in MijnOverheid ) expressly asking you to file one, there is no way out. You must file it.

You owe more than €45: if you have had several jobs at the same time or your withholdings were not applied correctly and you owe the state more than €45 in tax, you are legally obliged to declare it (even if you haven't received the letter).

The smart worker's strategy: imagine you haven't received any letter. Should you forget about it? Don't even think about it! If you don't receive the letter, you are not obliged to file, but you can do so voluntarily . And here is the golden fact: for 90% of foreigners who work temporarily or who haven't worked the full calendar year in the Netherlands, the tax return results in a refund .

If you don't file voluntarily, the state keeps that money. And we are talking about hundreds, sometimes thousands, of euros.

If you search forums for Spaniards in the Netherlands, you will see one word that causes real terror: the M-Biljet (M form).

There are several types of tax return forms in the Netherlands, but the two that matter to you are the P and the M:

The harsh reality about the M form

We won't lie to you. The M-Biljet is a complex form. It asks about your income in the Netherlands, but also about the months you spent in Spain in order to calculate your tax exemptions correctly.

It used to be an 80-page paper booklet. Today, in 2026, it can be done 100% online through the Belastingdienst portal using your DigiD , but the questions are still confusing if you don't master Dutch tax language.

💡 Our honest advice: for this first year (only the first), hire a Dutch tax adviser ( Belastingadviseur ) who speaks Spanish. It usually costs between €50 and €80. It is the best investment you will make, because they know which boxes to tick to get the maximum legal refund. From your second year (when you use the P form), you can do it yourself for free in the app.

3. Key deadlines 2026: what happens if I don't make it in time?

Dates in the Netherlands are sacred and late-filing fines are no joke.

Campaign opens: 1 March 2026.

Deadline: 1 May 2026 .

Being 8 April, time is running out. But as in any good system, there is a safety valve.

The lifeline: how to request an extension (Uitstel)

If it is 25 April and you are missing a document, your DigiD isn't active or your adviser is overloaded, don't file a sloppy tax return in a rush .

You have the right to request an official extension called Uitstel .

Go to Belastingdienst.nl and log in with your DigiD.

Look for the option Uitstel aanvragen (request extension).

With a couple of clicks, the government will automatically extend your deadline to 1 September 2026 . Free and with no questions asked.

This will give you months of peace of mind to organise your paperwork.

4. Documentación: El Santo Grial llamado «Jaaropgave»

Before you sit down at the computer (or call your adviser), you need to gather your arsenal. This is what you need in your folder:

Your active DigiD: the key to every procedure in the Netherlands.

Your BSN (and your partner's): the citizen number you were given when you registered.

The Jaaropgave: this is the most important document of the year.

What is the Jaaropgave?

By law, your employer must give you the Jaaropgave between January and March . It is usually uploaded to your employee portal or sent to you by email. Without the exact figures from this document, it is impossible to file your tax return.

Note: if you had three different jobs in 2025, you need to get all three Jaaropgaves from the three different companies.

5. The big secret: why do seasonal workers always get a refund?

In the Netherlands, the payroll withholding system (Loonheffing) is calculated on the assumption that you will work all year (12 months) earning that same salary .

If you arrive in the Netherlands in May and work until December (8 months), the company has been deducting tax every week as if you were going to earn €30,000 that year. However, since you only worked 8 months, your real annual income was, for example, €20,000.

In addition, there are tax credits ( Arbeidskorting and Algemene heffingskorting ) for employment income that often aren't correctly adjusted in the weekly payslip, building up a balance in your favour that you can only claim by filing a tax return.

6. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about taxes in the Netherlands

What if I have already returned to Spain, can I still claim my money? Of course! It is your money. If you worked in the Netherlands in 2025 but now in 2026 you live in Spain and have deregistered from the Dutch town hall, you must fill in the C-Biljet (the form for non-residents). Again, an online adviser can do it for you remotely in no time and the money will be paid into your Spanish bank account.

How long does the Belastingdienst take to pay the money? If you are quick and file before 1 April, you are guaranteed a decision (and usually payment) before 1 July. If you file now in April or request an extension, the process can take between 3 and 6 months. Patience is key; the money always arrives.

Conclusion: working in the Netherlands pays well, if you know how

The Dutch tax system can seem like a maze in your first year, but it is designed to be fair. The M-Biljet may be scary, but behind that bureaucratic barrier there is usually a juicy refund that rewards your effort working far from home.

Don't ignore your obligations and, above all, don't ignore your financial rights.

Does all this paperwork overwhelm you? That is exactly why you need an agency that doesn't just give you a plane ticket, but has your back. At International Job Challenge we support you before, during and after your work experience in the Netherlands , making sure you understand every payslip, every tax and every benefit.
