The Netherlands has one of the best public transport systems in the world. But let's be honest: your first day at a station, watching thousands of people swiping cards at the speed of light and dodging bicycles, is a little intimidating.
Relax, you don't need a master's degree to get around the Netherlands. In this guide we explain how to get from home to work quickly, cheaply and looking like a real Dutch local.
The Magic Card: How to pay for transport in the Netherlands
On Dutch public transport, cash is history. You have two main options for paying:
1. Your bank card or phone (Contactless)
If you have just arrived and haven't organised anything yet, this is your lifesaver. In the Netherlands you can check in and out of public transport simply by tapping your debit or credit card (or your phone with Apple/Google Pay) on the scanner. It is the OVpay system, fast and hassle-free.
2. The OV-chipkaart (Your mobility passport)
If you are going to live and work here, you need an OV-chipkaart . There is a blue version (anonymous, ideal for tourists) and a yellow one (personal). Get the yellow one . Why? Because you can load monthly passes from your employer and special discounts onto this card.
🚨 The golden rule: Check-in and Check-out
This is vital: you always have to tap your card when you get on (check-in) and always when you get off (check-out). The system calculates the fare based on the exact distance you travel.
The expert trick: If you forget to check out, the system will charge you an automatic penalty (around €20 on trains). If it happens, don't panic: go to the official website uitcheckgemist.nl and request a refund.
Means of Transport: Much more than bicycles
Although the bike is the undisputed queen, long distances require other solutions.
The Train (NS): Sprinter vs. Intercity
The main train company is NS. You will come across two types of train:
Sprinter: Slower and stops at every station, large and small.
Intercity: The fast train that only connects the main cities.
Ninja Warning: Look carefully at the windows before you sit down. There are first-class ( eerste klas ) and second-class ( tweede klas ) carriages. But the most important is the Stiltecoupé (silent carriage). If you talk on the phone or to your companion in this carriage, the murderous looks from the Dutch will strike you down instantly.
Buses, Trams and Metro
Bus networks connect almost every corner of the country, and cities such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam have an excellent metro network. Remember: bus drivers don't accept notes or coins. Either you have a card, or you're left behind.
What about electric scooters?
Careful here! Unlike Spain or other countries, electric scooters are banned on public roads in the Netherlands. Riding one can cost you a €380 fine. Better to rent an OV-fiets (the yellow and blue public bike at stations) for the last leg of your journey.
Getting to work: Who pays?
This is the best part of working in the Netherlands . Many Dutch employers help cover the cost of travelling between your home and work.
This is called Reiskostenvergoeding (travel expenses allowance).
Often, companies pay you an amount per kilometre travelled (currently around €0.23/km tax-free).
Other times, they pay part or all of your public transport pass directly. Always ask your boss or agency whether you are entitled to it!
Bear in mind that travelling by train during rush hour ( ochtendspits from 06:30 to 09:00 and avondspits from 16:00 to 18:30) costs more. Many company passes cover this, but it is good to know.

Quick Questions (FAQ)
Can I take my bike on the train?
Yes, but you pay a special bike supplement and never during rush hour Monday to Friday (06:30 to 09:00 and 16:00 to 18:30). At weekends you can take it all day. Folding bikes always travel free.
Do children travel free?
Children under 4 travel completely free on all public transport in the Netherlands.
What happens if I'm caught without a ticket?
The fine for travelling without a valid ticket ( zwartrijden ) is €50, plus the cost of the journey you were making. Ticket inspectors in the Netherlands don't turn a blind eye, so don't risk it.
